The office of the County Recorder was created by the first Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Iowa in 1839. Your County Recorder continues to maintain official records of documents affecting title to real estate in order to preserve property rights and protest innocent third parties in real estate transactions.

    The County Recorder, County Auditor and Clerk of the District Court constitute the ex officio jury commission of the county.

Your County Recorder collects real estate transfer tax on conveyances of property, a portion of which is retained in your county's general fund as a form of direct property tax relief.

Your County Recorder is a good accountant as millions of dollars are collected and accounted for by Iowa's 99 County Recorders.

    Your County Recorder must file detailed monthly and annual accountings with the State Department of Revenue and State Conservation Commission. In addition, your County Recorder must file detailed quarterly and annual accountings with the county and remit their share of the monies collected in the Recorder's Office.

County Recorders spend thousands of hours making possible the many programs of the State Conservation Commission. Because of their efforts, outdoor recreation is more accessible and tax dollars are saved.
